THE RACE & BOGGY DRAW TRAIL HISTORY

The volunteers at the Rotary Club of Dolores founded the Dolores Bike race in 1998 as a charity fundraiser. The trails at Boggy Draw were ideally suited for a mountain bike race and the Rotary Club recognized the increasing popularity of mountain biking in the area.  The trail system singletrack is very fast and flows well with plenty of passing opportunities.  The race has always been a grass-roots event that was once held during the popular small town Escalante Days event, but was moved to one week prior to accommodate the race growing and not minimize crowd, traffic and racer interactions. The Boggy Draw trail system, located on the San Juan National Forest,  was built and is maintained by the local mountain bikers and the SWCCA Bike Club.  It has undergone a variety of improvements and expansions so the routes have been modified throughout the years to take advantage of these.  In 2016, a 50-mile endurance category was added to accommodate racers looking for a bigger challenge. In 2017, the McPhee Overlook Trail was the featured trail, hugging high above the cliffs of McPhee Reservoir. It is now included in the Overlook, Oso & Beat Down races. With the recent addition of many new trails in the National Forest, the Beat Down race now features most of these awesome new singletrack trails.

OUR MOTTO IS "SERVICE ABOVE SELF"

We are 1.2 million neighbors, community leaders, and global citizens uniting for the common good to create positive, lasting change in our communities and around the world. With you, we can accomplish even more.

Our differing occupations, cultures, and countries give us a unique perspective. Our shared passion for service helps us accomplish the remarkable, on the small scale and worldwide.

WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT?

Our distinct point of view and approach gives us unique advantages:

  • We see differently: Our multidisciplinary perspective helps us see challenges in unique ways.

  • We think differently: We apply leadership and expertise to social issues—and find unique and applicable solutions.

  • We act responsibly: Our passion and perseverance create lasting change.

  • We make a difference at home and around the world: Our members can be found in your community and across the globe.

HOW DO WE WORK?

Our impact starts with our members—people who work tirelessly with their clubs to solve some of our communities' toughest challenges. Their efforts are supported by Rotary International, our member association, and The Rotary Foundation, which turns generous donations into grants that fund the work of our members and partners around the world. Rotary is led by our members—responsible leaders who help to carry forward our organization's mission and values in their elected roles.

HOW DO WE USE OUR FUNDS?

Responsible leadership means more than just doing good work— with all the Dolores members as volunteers, it means making the most out of every donation we receive.

WHAT CAUSES DO WE SUPPORT?

We have identified specific causes to target to maximize our local and global impact. At the same time, we understand that each community has its own unique needs and concerns. Through our network of resources and partners, we help clubs focus their service efforts in promoting peace, fighting disease, providing clean water, saving mothers and children, supporting education, and growing local economies.

The Dolores Rotary volunteers also help distribute monthly food commodities, we string up and maintain holiday lights in the town of Dolores and on the hillside, we support our public school system in a myriad of ways with scholarships, volunteers, letters of support, grants, and donations, and our primary focus is on youth leadership and development. We invite local businesses and charities to our weekly meetings to educate us and to identify ways in which the club can help. Every year we strive to make the Boggy Draw Beat Down Bike Race even better, helping to bring in tourism and highlighting our amazing trail systems.

Our Rotary meetings are held on Wednesday at 6:30am at Kelly's Kitchen. You are welcome to attend a meeting and to see if Rotary is something you'd like to do to give back to the community. We are leaders, we are neighbors, we are retirees, we are educators, we are young and old, new and experienced. We relish fresh perspectives and novel ways at solving problems.
